Window Shopping

Windows add light, ambiance and character to our homes.  Because they are uniquely shaped and situated, window treatments you preferred in one home may not work in another.  Whether you like your privacy, or keep your windows covered (no shade either way), here are a few options you can use to dress them up or down.

Where you live helps determine window decor.  If you live in the country you may not feel the need to cover your windows at all, enjoying the views without the bother of pulling shades and closing curtains.  I remember baby-sitting when I was teenager, for a family that lived in rural Minnesota. They had high picture windows and as it grew dark, the trees (and creatures no doubt) were in constant motion. I think I would have preferred not looking out (I didn’t want to see a moose looking in).    If you have very close neighbors, maintaining your privacy might be a priority (Rear Window just came to mind…). Yeah, you’re going to want something.

Also, consider cleaning; you can vacuum cloth shades and faux wood blinds.  Fabric box valances are another story.  They’re dust collectors, and awkward to vacuum.  It’s worth the effort to take them down and start fresh.  I’ve also taken down an outdoor metal valance over my kitchen window so I could look up and see the pine trees and sunsets.  Having close neighbors, I bought a white valance and hung it with a tension rod over the lower half of the window.

Climate is another factor in choosing window treatments.  If you want to keep the cold out and the heat in, or if the afternoon sun is just too hot, get some insulated curtains.  For the past couple moves I have used room-darkening, thermal curtains that help to balance room temperatures. I love them in the grayish-white; they are a quality material and easy to hang with the metal grommets.  I toss them on a med-high heat with a wet washcloth to get the wrinkles out.  I like the look of a clean window frame, so I usually buy tension rods.

Ok, you can keep one sun-catcher. Make it your favorite and enjoy the view.
